The Man In The Red Bandana
As the horrors of 9/11/01 were unfolding, we have a heroic story to share with all of you. If you haven't heard of The Man In
The Red Bandana, this should bring a little warmth to your heart on a day that was filled with fear, worry and destruction of property and innocent life.
Welles Crowther was a 24-year-old equities trader working in the South Tower of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. But that day, he became known as the Man with the Red Bandana.
A former volunteer firefighter, Crowther always carried a red bandana, a gift from his father. When the first plane struck the building, he could have saved himself. Instead, Welles grabbed his bandana, tied it around his face to protect against
smoke, and sprang into action. Moving through the chaos, he found survivors, guiding them to safety through the darkened stairways.
Witnesses later recalled how this calm, collected man in the red
bandana carried a woman on his back and led others down to the 61st floor, returning again and again to save more lives. His brave actions helped many escape before the tower collapsed. Tragically, Welles did not make it out himself.
But his legacy as a hero lives on, with those he saved remembering the courage of the man in the red bandana.
We will never forget 9/11/01...
Yours in health,
